This historical Shotgun style building is located in Peaceful Valley along the south bank of the Spokane River. It was built by Finnish carpenters in 1901 and served lumber and mining laborers when they would come to the city. It was designed as a rooming house with four separate rooms, each with a door, a bed , and a sink and common toilet at the rear of the building. Each room had a corresponding shed on the property for them to store their personal belongings.
The building was remodeled in the 80’s to a one bedroom house. In 2018 John decided to add on to the original building keeping the 12/12 roof line and a wider Shotgun design. The intent was to keep the narrow look of the shotgun design when viewed from Water Ave. Jesse Swanson and Roch Fautch https://magicraftsman.com were the builders on this project and added modern touches to the interior of the building, including a stone arch to merge the new to the old building. The space is a work of art.
The Thamm’s live at Shotgun Studios and open their living room periodically to share the work of artists in the region in addition to sharing the building design. Shotgun Studios is a unique tribute to art and design that maintains the historical look of the original building and compliments the unique building and history of Peaceful Valley.
