Matthew Wolf

My artwork uses bright colors and high contrast to deliver imagery representative of historical figures, political movements, and culture. Predominantly painting portraits of people I think the history books have forgotten or whose stories have never been told, I use a style of painting poured straight from my brain. My vision as an artist and activist is to create art for the people, and so my style blends elements of fauvism, graffiti, and other aspects of contemporary art to make social commentary about justice, freedom and sovereignty, and the fight against oppression worldwide. In doing so, I introduce my audience to important figures and imagery, both past and present, who stand for similar values. My method is to mix not only styles, but types of paint as well, including acrylic, water color, and spray paint, on one canvas to deliver the boldest piece of artwork possible. Through use of visually striking colors and images, I hope to share a piece of me, my values, and my culture with my audience.
